True, but the "noughties" do end on Dec 31, 2009 (the same way that the "nineties" ended on Dec 31, 1999 even though that decade - and the millennium - ended on Dec 31, 2000). Yes, it is confusing.

Is it not enough that we have those ugly, ugly words: "aughties" and "noughties"?

Every time you hear that, you should just start referring to TFDOTNM (the first decade of the new millennium). Bet they shut up after hearing you say that a few times.
