Me, I'm more kicked about Junot Diaz winning for Fiction. Giving Dylan a Pulitzer is a bit like giving JLG an honorary Oscar - he's so beyond all that.
True, true. But I haven't read the Diaz (shame on me) so, you know...
And about Hass sharing the poetry pulitzer?
A rocker without a Pulitzer is like Paris Hilton without a sphygmomanometer.
SB: I'd say Hass deserves it. I haven't read the Schultz, so I'm not in a position to comment.
The thing I find tricky about Poetry prizes is the way many of these big awards (the Pulitzer, the NBA) end up including both new volumes and 'New and Selected Poems' - which always makes it hard to compare.
Also, of course, there's a serious large press bias in all this - it says a lot that the three nominees are published by Norton, Harcourt and Harper Collins. I think much of the more interesting poetry out there is published by smaller presses. In my list of top poetry books from last year, I doubt Hass would figure in the top 10, even though Time and Materials is really good work.

falstaff: that's probably because they go only by publishing date, rather than the poems in the book - i agree that 'new and selected' makes no sense.
you mentioned 'big press bias'. that is one reason why no prize of any kind for any of the arts is anything more than a curiosity. the more deeply one is involved with any art, the more dissatisfied one is likely to be about these awards, don't you think?
