Predictions

of the Nobel Kind:

1. SOME EASTERN EUROPEAN POET OR NOVELIST NOBODY HAS EVER HEARD OF.

PRO: When at a loss for new flesh, the Nobel committee goes back to incest. In the past 10 years, seven of the laureates have been European.

CON: The most common baby name in Europe is Mohammed. Aren’t all these white men dead by now?

Nice. I'd go with Achebe, except I suspect the Nobel committee may not want to follow too closely in the footsteps of the Man Booker International Prize. That rules out Kadare as well.

He has a point about Kundera - I had the same "wait, he hasn't won already" reaction.

My wild card entry of the year: William Trevor. Isn't it time the Nobel went to someone who writes exquisite short stories?

I know...I wish they'd disregard previous awards, though and give him the Nobel.

Hmm. Wondering who my Nominee Not on the List would be.

If it goes to a poet, it should go to Yves Bonnefoy.
