Nominees for Asian Film Awards 2008

My friend, Shanker Raman has been nominated in the Best Cinematographer category at the 2008 Asian Film Awards, for the film Frozen.

Yay!

Also among the other nominees are - hold your breath - Deepika Padukone for OSO (Best Acress) and Vishal Dadlani and Shekhar Ravjiani (Best Composer[s]) for ditto.

Shanker called yesterday to say he's off to Hong Kong and did I want anything.

"I want Tony Leung Chiu-wai. But if you can't kidnap him, make sure you get me a photograph."

"Ok. I'll have a photograph taken with Tony boy and send it to you."

"Who wants a photograph of you? I want only...

- and here my voice took on a low, beatlemaniacal quality

...only Tony Leung Chiu-wai."

"You can edit me out, no?"

"Ha."

"You're right. You can't edit me out of your life."

"Shut up. Listen. I don't mind if you just touch him and then don't wash your hands until I see you next. Oh, and while you're there, please get me a copy of Lust, Caution."

"M will have something to say to me if I don't wash my hands for the next few months. Mail me a list of films you want."

Bah. Just when I was ready to talk about Tony for a bit longer. Excuse me while I go look at his filmography. I have a list to compile.

Now any garden-variety fan of the guy's would have just asked for Tony Leung. But to demand "Tony Leung Chiu-Wai" (the hyphen is a classic touch), now that requires a stalker-level familiarity with the guy's biography...

Cat; Ah, but that's because of the other Tony Leung. One must differentiate!

Oh I didn't know there were two Tonys. I even saw "The Lover" thinking that it was the same Tony there.. How does it go? all Chinese look the same. Haha :)

I had such high expectations from Lust, Caution but it was so disappointing. The most boring part was the sex scene. Both of them work so hard that you start wishing that they take a break and rest for a while before starting again!

btw, have you read Anthony Lane's review of 2046? This might interest you if you haven't:

"I am not competent to judge whether Chow is really the type to make the opposite sex go weak at the knees, waist, neck, and other points of seizure, although to my eyes he looked, with his whisker of mustache, like a no-good rat in a George Raft movie. What I will say is that nobody who has the ungallant gall to inform us, in voice-over, that “I became an expert ladies' man” is a ladies' man at all. Ladies of every description will know him better as a creep."

Alok: But see, I have no expectations from the film except to enjoy seeing Tony Leung (Chiu-Wai, please note, CC)for a few hundred minutes.

I hadn't read the Lane review. All I can say is, he makes his incompetence clear: of course his chracter is a creep but a creep who still commands our sympathy. If an actor can - and does - pull off that very important distinction he deserves praise.

(of course I'm biased!)

Sorry I missed adding the link

I actually liked him in that film even though all the women in it were miles ahead of him. I was very pissed off with the review when I read it that's why I remembered it. It makes me laugh though.

SB: I am as much as Tony Leung Chiu-Wai groupie as you or BM but don't ask for a copy of Lust, Caution unless you want to get over the man. The movie is so boring (and Leung's character is super disappoing too; if anything watch it for the woman) that it will do that to you.

Also, no one, I repeat no one calls Anthony Lane incompetent. Alright?

alok: thanks for the link.

veena: now you've made me want to watch the film.

and i didn't call lane incompetent; he called himself that and i merely agreed. what's eating you? it was specifically about his inability to judge why women go weak-kneed about tony. how would he know, right? he's deferring to our superior knowledge in this matter.

Lust, Caution is ok - very ersatz Kar Wai - and about an hour too long. Personally, I came away from it with the depressing knowledge that in the same amount of time I could have watched two Kar Wai films and each one would have been much more worthwhile.

As for Lane, I think you're all missing the point. It isn't what Lane says, it's how he says it. That description is sheer delight, who cares whether it's accurate?

Falstaff: ...in the same amount of time I could have watched two Kar Wai films....

Not if the films in question were as long as 2046.

And about lane, agree. It's pretty much what I said in the Clive James post.
